German sociologist who defined the modern state as the institution that successfully claims a monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory, a definition set out in his 1919 lecture Politics as a Vocation and still the standard definition of the state in political science. He also developed an influential typology of authority as traditional, charismatic or legal-rational. He died in 1920.
