Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, born April 20, 1960, in Placetas, has served as President of Cuba since October 10, 2019, and as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, the country's top leadership post, since April 19, 2021, succeeding Raul Castro as the first person outside the Castro family to lead Cuba since the 1959 revolution. He earlier served as President of the Council of State and Ministers from 2018 to 2019 and as First Vice President from 2013 to 2018, held provincial party leadership posts in Villa Clara and Holguin provinces before that, and served as Minister of Higher Education from 2009 to 2012. He holds a degree in electrical engineering from the Central University of Las Villas and later earned a doctorate in technical sciences.
