Mikheil Kavelashvili, born July 22, 1971, in Bolnisi, has served as President of Georgia since December 29, 2024, elected by an electoral college in a vote boycotted by the opposition and criticized internationally as illegitimate amid Georgia's wider political crisis. A former professional footballer, he played as a striker for Dinamo Tbilisi and Manchester City among other clubs and earned 46 caps for Georgia's national team between 1991 and 2002, before entering Parliament in 2016 as a member of Georgian Dream and co-founding the more hardline People's Power party in 2022.
