Millard Fillmore, born January 7, 1800, in Cayuga County, New York, and died March 8, 1874, served as the thirteenth President of the United States from 1850 to 1853, succeeding to office on the death of Zachary Taylor. His administration signed the Compromise of 1850, a package of measures including a stricter Fugitive Slave Act intended to ease sectional tension over slavery's expansion into territory gained from the Mexican-American War. He was the last President to be a member of the Whig Party, which collapsed as a national political force soon after he left office.
