Mohamed Muizzu, born June 15, 1978, in Male, has served as the 8th President of the Maldives since November 17, 2023. He holds a PhD in civil engineering from the University of Leeds and served as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure from 2012 to 2018, the longest tenure in that role, before being elected Mayor of Male in 2021. Leading the People's National Congress, he defeated incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the 2023 election with 54.04 percent of the vote, and his presidency has emphasized reducing India's military presence in the country and strengthening ties with China.
