Mswati III has reigned as King of Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, since April 25, 1986, presiding over sub-Saharan Africa's last remaining absolute monarchy. He rules largely by decree, appoints the prime minister and cabinet, and has faced periodic pro-democracy protests calling for constitutional reform and the legalization of opposition political parties, which remain banned under the current system.
