Naruhito is the 126th Emperor of Japan, having acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne on 1 May 2019 following his father Emperor Akihito's abdication; his reign is designated the Reiwa era. He served as Crown Prince from 1989 to 2019, earning a history degree from Gakushuin University and studying at Oxford University, was formally invested as Crown Prince in 1991, and married diplomat Masako Owada in 1993.
