Nayib Armando Bukele Ortez (born 24 July 1981 in San Salvador) has served as the 43rd president of El Salvador since 1 June 2019. He worked in advertising before entering politics in 2011, serving as mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlan from 2012 to 2015 and of San Salvador from 2015 to 2018; expelled from the FMLN party in 2017, he founded Nuevas Ideas and won the presidency in 2019 with 53 percent of the vote running under the GANA banner. His presidency has centered on reducing crime through his Territorial Control Plan, under which the reported homicide rate fell from 38 per 100,000 in 2019 to 1.9 per 100,000 in 2024, though the accuracy of these figures remains contested; he also made bitcoin legal tender in 2021 and has faced political crises involving military intimidation of the legislature and judicial purges.
