Arthur Neville Chamberlain, born March 18, 1869, in Birmingham, and died November 9, 1940, served as Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1937 to May 1940. He pursued a policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany, symbolized by the Munich Agreement of September 1938, before declaring war on Germany on September 3, 1939 following its invasion of Poland. He resigned on May 10, 1940, after the failure of the Norway Campaign eroded confidence in his leadership, and was succeeded by Winston Churchill.
