Paul Kagame (born 23 October 1957) is a Rwandan politician and former military officer who has served as president of Rwanda since 22 April 2000 and leads the Rwandan Patriotic Front. Born to a Tutsi family that fled to Uganda during the Rwandan Revolution, he fought in Yoweri Museveni's rebel army before joining the Rwandan Patriotic Front's 1990 invasion of Rwanda, and as the Front's military commander led the force that ended the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He served as vice president and minister of defense under President Pasteur Bizimungu from 1994 to 2000, during which he was Rwanda's de facto leader, before becoming president in his own right in 2000 and winning four subsequent presidential elections by landslide margins exceeding 90 percent, contests international monitors have consistently questioned the fairness of; human rights groups characterize his rule as authoritarian.
