Peter Kropotkin (1842 to 1921) was a Russian revolutionary, geographer and the foremost theorist of anarchist communism, born into the Russian aristocracy before renouncing his title in 1871. His 1902 book Mutual Aid argued, from evidence across the animal and human world, that cooperation rather than conflict is the chief factor in evolution and social development, giving anarchism's vision of voluntary cooperation its most influential scientific grounding.
