James Ramsay MacDonald, born October 12, 1866, in Lossiemouth, Scotland, and died November 9, 1937, was the first Labour Party politician to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, leading the first minority Labour government from January to November 1924 and a second from 1929 to 1935. In 1931, amid the Great Depression, he formed a cross-party National Government with Conservative and Liberal support, a move that split the Labour Party and led many former colleagues to regard him as a traitor to the movement he had helped found. He remained prime minister of the National Government until 1935.
