Rene Cassin was a French jurist who served on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights under Eleanor Roosevelt's chairmanship, doing much of the detailed work of revising and editing the text into its final form, a contribution some fellow drafters have disputed the extent of. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1968, twenty years after the Declaration's adoption, arguing in his acceptance speech that state sovereignty could no longer be treated as exclusive where individual rights were concerned.
