Sadyr Japarov, born December 6, 1968, in Keng-Suu, has served as the sixth President of Kyrgyzstan since January 28, 2021. He was freed from an eleven-and-a-half-year prison sentence during the 2020 revolution, then served as Prime Minister and briefly as acting president before resigning both on November 14, 2020, to run in and win the 2021 presidential election. Earlier in his career he was elected a deputy to the Supreme Council in 2005 and worked in the presidential administration under Kurmanbek Bakiyev until Bakiyev's 2010 overthrow, after which he fled the country in 2013 before his 2017 arrest. He leads the Mekenchil party and holds a law degree, earned in 2006, from the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University.
