Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, born December 31, 1935, a son of Abdulaziz, the founder of Saudi Arabia, has served as King of Saudi Arabia since January 23, 2015, when he inherited the throne at age 79 following the death of his half-brother, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, from pneumonia. Before his accession he served as Governor of Riyadh Province for nearly 48 years, from 1963 to 2011. His son, Mohammed bin Salman, serves as Crown Prince and Prime Minister and is widely regarded as the kingdom's de facto ruler amid his father's advancing age and health.
