Salva Kiir Mayardit, born September 13, 1951, in Akon, Gogrial County, in what was then Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, has served as President of South Sudan since the country's independence on July 9, 2011, its first and to date only president. He rose through rebel military ranks during Sudan's civil wars, becoming President of the autonomous government of Southern Sudan and First Vice President of Sudan after the death of Sudan People's Liberation Movement leader John Garang in July 2005, before leading the new nation upon independence.
