Salvador Allende

Physician and co-founder of Chile's Socialist Party who became the first democratically elected Marxist president in Latin America, winning Chile's 1970 election. His government pursued nationalisation and wealth redistribution while seeking to preserve democratic institutions and civil liberties. Economic strain, political polarisation and a covert United States destabilisation campaign preceded the military coup of 11 September 1973, led by Augusto Pinochet, in which Allende died. His record remains debated: supporters point to his democratic mandate and social reforms, critics to the economic instability of his final year; both are part of the settled historical account rather than a matter of dispute over the underlying events.
