Serdar Berdimuhamedow, born September 22, 1981, in Ashgabat, has served as President of Turkmenistan since March 19, 2022, succeeding his father Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow after winning a presidential election that international observers characterized as not genuinely competitive, making Turkmenistan the first modern Central Asian country ruled by a dynastic succession within an outwardly republican system. He leads the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan and previously served as Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers for Economics and Finance, Minister of Industry and Construction Materials, Governor of Ahal Region, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He studied at the Turkmen Agricultural University, the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.
