Stanley Baldwin, later 1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, born August 3, 1867, in Bewdley, Worcestershire, and died December 14, 1947, served three separate terms as Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: May to December 1923, November 1924 to June 1929, and June 1935 to May 1937. His second government faced the 1926 General Strike, called by the Trades Union Congress in support of striking coal miners. In his third term he navigated the 1936 abdication crisis, in which King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the divorced American Wallis Simpson.
