Taneti Maamau, born September 16, 1960, in Onotoa, has served as the fifth President of Kiribati since March 11, 2016, leading the Tobwaan Kiribati Party with policies aimed at strengthening the country's economy and addressing its social issues. Before entering the presidency he worked as a planning officer and later permanent secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, and represented Onotoa in the Maneaba ni Maungatabu across three terms beginning in 2007; he has also served as Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific since August 2018. He studied at the University of the South Pacific and earned a master's degree from the University of Queensland in 2003.
