Tommaso Campanella

Political and Economic Theorists

Tommaso Campanella was born in Stilo in Calabria on September 5, 1568 and died in Paris in 1639. He entered the Dominican Order at the age of fourteen and became one of the most important philosophers of the late Renaissance. His thought engaged with the philosophy of nature, magic, political theory and natural religion, and he defended the natural philosophy of Bernardino Telesio against Aristotle. He was arrested for heresy in 1594, condemned by the Roman Inquisition in 1595, and later spent years in imprisonment in Naples. His best-known work today is the utopian text La città del Sole, known in English as The City of the Sun.
