Trygve Lie was a Norwegian Labour Party politician and diplomat who served as the first Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1946 to 1952. A former Norwegian foreign minister who led his government in exile in London during the Second World War, he oversaw the United Nations' response to the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, a stance that led the Soviet Union to block his reappointment, and he resigned in 1952 before completing what would have been a further term.
