U Thant was a Burmese diplomat and educator who served as the third Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1961 to 1971, the first non-European to hold the post. He played a central mediating role during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and guided the UN through the decolonization era and the early years of the Vietnam War, while also facing criticism over the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers from Egypt shortly before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
