William Ewart Gladstone, born December 29, 1809, in Liverpool, and died May 19, 1898, served four separate terms as Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in 1868 to 1874, 1880 to 1885, 1886, and 1892 to 1894, the only person to hold the office four times and, at 82 in his final term, the oldest to serve as prime minister. He championed Irish Home Rule, introducing Home Rule bills in 1886 and 1893 that failed to pass and split the Liberal Party. Known as the Grand Old Man of British politics, his policies emphasized free trade, low taxation and balanced budgets.
