Xanana Gusmao is an East Timorese revolutionary leader who commanded the Fretilin-linked armed resistance against Indonesian occupation from the 1980s and became the internationally recognized symbol of East Timor's independence struggle. He served as the country's first president from 2002 to 2007 and has since returned repeatedly to government as prime minister, a post he currently holds.
