He earlier served as governor and party secretary of Zhejiang province from 2002 to 2007 and briefly as Shanghai party secretary in 2007, before being appointed vice president in 2008 and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission in 2010, and succeeded Hu Jintao as paramount leader in 2012.
