People Power Revolution

Revolutions and Popular Uprisings

Nonviolent uprising in the Philippines from 22 to 25 February 1986 that ended the twenty year rule of President Ferdinand Marcos. Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos filled Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in Manila after Marcos claimed victory over Corazon Aquino in a fraud tainted snap election, and when military leaders defected to the opposition, Marcos and his family fled into exile. Aquino was installed as president, and the episode became an internationally cited model of nonviolent, mass civilian resistance to authoritarian rule.
