The Constitution of Ukraine was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 28 June 1996 with 315 of 450 possible votes, replacing the 1978 constitution of the Ukrainian SSR and making Ukraine the last post-Soviet state to adopt its own constitution; 28 June is marked annually as Constitution Day. Amendments in 2004 restructured the political system, were overturned by President Viktor Yanukovych in 2010 on a Constitutional Court ruling, were reinstated after the 2013-2014 Euromaidan protests, and were followed by 2019 amendments naming European Union and NATO membership as strategic goals.
