The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, settling legal disputes between states and issuing advisory opinions on questions of international law. It was established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, with its judges first elected the following year. It is a separate body from the International Criminal Court: the ICJ hears disputes between states and has no jurisdiction over individuals, while the ICC prosecutes individual people for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression; the ICC's founding treaty did not replace the ICJ when it entered into force in 2002.
