Nuclear posture is a government's declared doctrine and strategy for the production, deployment and potential use of nuclear weapons, a sub-branch of military strategy that treats nuclear weapons as a means to political ends rather than only as battlefield tools. Beyond actual deployment, a substantial part of nuclear posture is the use of these weapons and their declared doctrine as negotiating and deterrence instruments, covering questions such as declared first-use policy, arsenal size and modernization, and participation in arms-control and non-proliferation agreements.
